Prof Praneet Valodia

Praneet Valodia, an adjunct professor, is currently an independent healthcare consultant.
Praneet is a recipient of 4 national awards. In 2015, he was a recipient of the UWC Chancellor’s Outstanding Alumnus Award for making a significant contribution in the field of Health Sciences In 2016, he was the recipient of the Titanium Lifetime Achievement Award. This award, adjudicated by the Board of Healthcare Funders of Southern Africa, recognizes excellence and significant contributions to the healthcare industry in Southern Africa.

In 2016, he was the recipient of National Pioneer Pharmacy Professional Award and the recipient of the National Pharmacist Award (Research, Consultancy, Clinical), both awards were presented by the South African Pharmacy Council.
After serving as an academic staff member for 16 years, he entered the corporate sector on a full-time basis in 2002. He joined Metropolitan Health where he worked as a director of medicine risk management, clinical executive, head of product development, research and development executive, and chairman of the Drugs and Therapeutics committee. He was the clinical executive for the Qualsa Bankmed and Qualsa Pro Sano business units. From 1997 to 2005 Praneet served as a Managed Healthcare consultant to Pro Sano Medical Scheme.
In 2009, Praneet was appointed as an advanced specialist in medicines and beneficiary management in the Health Intelligence Unit at Medscheme. In 2011, he joined the Independent Clinical Oncology Network (ICON) as an executive manager for innovation and development. At ICON, he also served as the chairman of the oncology formulary committee. Besides innovation, he was involved with developing public-private partnerships in 6 provinces in South Africa. He also served as a member of the Western Cape Provincial Coding Committee (2001-2002).
Praneet is playing a key role in shaping the healthcare arena in South Africa. He was a member of the Pricing Committee (appointed by Ministers of Health from 2005 to 2016) and chairman of that committee’s Pharmacoeconomics Task Team. Currently, he is a consultant in the healthcare industry focusing on the delivery of affordable and quality healthcare in South Africa. He continues to supervise postgraduate theses in health economics focusing on the development of total-cost-of-care models.

While working in the corporate sector, the University Western Cape also appointed him as an extra-ordinary/adjunct professor 8 times.
In 2015, Praneet started his own business as an independent healthcare consultant offering services in the fields of pharmaco- and health economics, digital health innovation, health outcomes research, data analytics, medicine management, disease management, clinical trial evaluation, innovation in healthcare, developing market access solutions for medicines (risk-sharing), advisory to managed healthcare and medical schemes, health and medicine policy for government, harm reduction programmes and healthcare advocacy. He has served on 2 boards of large corporate organizations, i.e., on an Expert Medical Advisory Board and a social compact advisory board. Praneet has provided expert views on topics such as healthcare strategy (pharmaceuticals, hospitals, medical schemes, managed care), IT healthcare landscape, value-based procurement strategy, pricing and re-imbursement, biosimilars, cannabis, health technology assessment, treatment of selected diseases (e.g. cancer, TB), innovative medical interventions, etc.
Praneet has over 30 years’ experience in managed healthcare, public health, pharmaceutical policy and training, and a strong track record in technology development and innovation. He has interacted with government, medical schemes, healthcare professionals, academics, industry bodies and professional societies. He has also worked with a number of world renowned experts (such as those at the FDA, USA) on data analysis and statistical models. His PhD also focused on the latter. He has developed unique models to measure the value of healthcare interventions using ‘real world data’ in managed healthcare and clinical environments. His research has been published in various accredited journals, and he has presented his research findings at numerous national and international scientific and healthcare conferences. He sacrificed 6 years of full-time employment to pursue his passion for postgraduate research in the academic environment.
